Oxygen (O2)

What is Oxygen (O2) ?

Oxygen is a non-metal element that is a gas at room temperature. Its molecules contain two oxygen atoms.

Oxygen is vital for respiration, which is the process that transfers energy from glucose to cells

Oxygen is necessary for burning to occur. However, burning will only happen when the mixture of fuel and oxygen is hot enough and the Fuel O2 Mixture reaches the Lower Flammable Limit ( LFL)

Uses of Oxygen

Common uses of oxygen include production of steel, plastics and textiles, brazing, welding and cutting of steels and other metals, rocket propellant, oxygen therapy, and life support systems in aircraft, submarines, spaceflight and diving.

Can Oxygen be Dangerous ?

Pure oxygen can be deadly. Our blood has evolved to capture the oxygen we breathe in and bind it safely to the transport molecule called haemoglobin. ... The result is that free oxygen binds to the surface proteins of the lungs, interferes with the operation of the central nervous system and also attacks the retina

and Oxygen Rich environment ( typically above 24% in atmosphere ) can also be a fire hazard Oxygen itself is not flammable, but it can cause other materials that burn to ignite more easily and to burn far more rapidly. The result is that a fire involving oxygen can appear explosive-like.

It is important therefore to have Oxygen Enrichement monitors when working in areas where Oxygen is being used and leaks could occur . Covid Ventilator rooms is a recent example .

A lack of Oxygen can cause  low oxygen levels in your blood a condition called hypoxemia. Having low oxygen levels in your tissues is called hypoxia. Hypoxemia can happen in high altitudes or if an inert or other gas displaces the Oxygen in a room or enclosed  /confined space .

It is important therefore to have Oxygen Deficency / Depletion monitors when working in these areas .
