Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S)

What is Hydrogen Sulphide ( H2S ) ?

Hydrogen sulphide (also known as H2S, sewer gas, swamp gas, stink damp, and sour damp) is a colourless gas known for its pungent "rotten egg" odor at low concentrations. It is extremely flammable, highly toxic  and very corrosive . Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is used or produced in a number of industries, such as. Oil and gas refining. Mining.

What is Hydrogen Suphide ( H2S ) used for ?

Hydrogen sulfide is used primarily to produce sulphuric acid and sulphur. It is also used to create a variety of inorganic sulfides used to create pesticides, leather, dyes, and pharmaceuticals. Hydrogen sulphide is used to produce heavy water for nuclear power plants (like CANDU reactors specifically).

Is Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) Dangerous ?

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is responsible for many incidents of occupational toxic exposure, especially in the petroleum industry but also in confined undergrown spaces such as sewers and slurry pits where it can congragate . H2S is immediately fatal when concentrations are over 500-1000 parts per million (ppm) but exposure to lower concentrations, such as 10-500 ppm, can cause various respiratory symptoms that range from rhinitis to acute respiratory failure. H2S may also affect multiple organs, causing temporary or permanent derangements in the nervous, cardiovascular, renal, hepatic, and hematological systems.
